US veterans to return war medals in protest

Narayan Mahon for msnbc.com

Iraq War veteran Steven Acheson at his home in Platteville, Wis., on May 14, 2012.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

Iraq war veteran Steven Acheson will engage in the rarest of protests this weekend: He will hand back his military service medals at the NATO summit in Chicago, an?act one veteran calls “disgraceful.”

Acheson, who served for five years in the Army, including more than a year in Iraq that he says?left him with PTSD and nightmares, is taking this step to protest the “war on terror”?and the force leading it, NATO. He will be joined by a few dozen veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who are concerned about the wars’ fallout on veterans and civilians alike.

?I feel like this is a really good way for me to kind of, not clear my conscience, but just make a step in the direction of healing and kind of reconciling with the Afghan people and the Iraq people,? said Acheson, a 27-year-old college student from Wisconsin and a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, which includes soldiers who served in any of the post- 9/11 conflict zones, ?? and let them know that we?re standing by their side and we?re not standing with NATO anymore. We don?t agree with the policies that are driving these wars.?

Acheson and 30-50 fellow 9/11-era veterans will carry their medals as they lead an anti-war march this Sunday through Chicago?s downtown area to the convention center where NATO is holding its summit. President Obama and other world leaders are scheduled to be among the summit attendees, and the city of Chicago is bracing for major protests.

Organizers are hoping the rally, which caps a week-long series of anti-NATO actions, will draw thousands. The Iraq and Afghanistan veterans will be flanked by Vietnam veterans and will hold a reconciliation ceremony with Afghans for Peace.

They intend to carry an American flag that they will lower and replace with a white one as they approach the summit venue. They are planning to pin their medals to the American flag, which they?d like to present to NATO officials. If they?re unable to do so, they may construct an ad hoc memorial or toss the medals toward the convention center — like some 900 Vietnam veterans did in 1971 on Capitol Hill in an anti-war protest dubbed ?Operation Dewey Canyon III.?

Barry Romo was West Coast coordinator for the Vietnam Veterans Against the War during the 1971 week-long demonstration.

?Wives left husbands; parents said ? those medals were something you should be giving the grandkids. But I mean, the level of death was just really too much for us to deal with at that time and we said, you know, if there?s a question of medals versus lives then there was no question,? he said.

Returning the medals ? even those that are given just for showing up to the theater of conflict, as are some of the ones the veterans plan to return ? is not without controversy.

?They?re as much of a disgrace as the veterans back in the Vietnam days that did the same thing,? said retired Army 1st Sgt. Troy Steward, of New York, who served 22 years and is now a military blogger. ?If these veterans aren?t proud of the service that they did ? then they should never have accepted them (medals) in the first place.?

Steward, 43, who served in Afghanistan, said the action was ?disgraceful and disrespectful? to others who had served. While the veterans were welcome to express their opinions, he said, there were a lot of ?better ways to do it than essentially shaming your military service and your brethren.?

Acheson will return his ?Global War on Terrorism Service Medal? and the ?Iraq Campaign Medal?; he is keeping others he received.

Aaron Hughes, a 30-year-old organizer for IVAW who served six years in the Army, including 15 months in Iraq and Kuwait, also will return two medals.

In the process of searching for a way to heal ?we came to these symbols of the occupations, which are these medals that we carry around and we still have,? Hughes said. ?They?re these ? reminders of what we?ve done, that it?s time to let go of.?

?I think it?s something that many of us are conflicted about, but we also feel like this is the right action to take,? he noted, adding that there was a lot of consensus on the returning of the medals. ?It is a sacrifice, but it?s one that we feel is worth it.?

But some?cautioned the veterans to think carefully before handing over the medals.

?They become almost like family heirlooms in some ways,? said Adrian Lewis, a professor specializing in 20th century warfare at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. ?It’s not the norm to give them back. Most folks are proud of them. They feel like they earned them and they?re indications that they served their country.?

?They may regret it at some point … and their family may ultimately regret it, too,? he added.

Unlike the Vietnam War, Americans today don?t have the same outrage over the current conflicts, Lewis said.

?Most Americans are not paying attention to the war … they have no stake in it, no commitment to it,? he added, noting that he therefore didn?t expect the veterans? medal protest to ?be a big deal. It’s not a game-changer.?

It?s not clear how many other veterans have taken similar action. The Department of Defense, the Air Force and Army said they did not keep records on how many medals have been given back.

“We’re very proud of the service rendered by our soldiers and veterans, and they are free to do with their awards and decorations as they please,” George Wright, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon, said in an e-mail.

Acheson said the veterans don?t have high expectations for how NATO officials will receive their protest. He also noted that he was keeping some of his medals because he was proud of his service, even though he was upset that he ended up fighting in a country that had nothing to do with 9/11.

?I?m tired of seeing ? fellow vets being redeployed with traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder, and I?m tired of seeing soldiers being deployed in general to an illegal war,? he said. ?I just feel like we?ve spent enough money and enough lives over there ? it?s time to come home.?

Do you think returning war medals in protest is ‘disrespectful’ of other veterans?

What is arbitration? You sign away rights. Is that OK?

Cellphone and credit card applications typically contain an arbitration clause that keeps you from suing the phone carrier or bank if a dispute arises. Often, the bank gets to pick the arbitrator. The federal government is looking to see if arbitration clauses give companies too much power.

By Bill Hardekopf,?Contributor / May 15, 2012

In this October file photo, a man using a cellphone passes an AT&T store in New York. When you sign up for a cellphone or checking account, it’s likely that you sign an arbitration clause, which means giving up the right to sue the company in the event of a dispute.

If you have applied for a checking account, cellphone, or credit card, you have probably signed away some of your rights.

You may not even be aware that you have. In many cases, consumers agree to an arbitration clause that forfeits their right to a jury trial or class-action lawsuit if something goes wrong.

That means that if your cellphone carrier overbills you, you can’t take the company to court. If the credit card company isn’t moving to resolve a dispute, a threat to sue probably won’t get you anywhere. Instead, you’ve agreed to have your case heard before an arbitrator who will make a binding decision.

Is that a good thing?

Companies that use arbitration clauses claim that the process is fair, and that it is faster and less expensive than litigation. It’s also quite popular.

Of the 265 types of checking accounts offered by the 10 biggest banks, all but 10 required accountholders to waive the right to a jury trial, according to a 2010 study by the Pew Safe Checking in the Electronic Age Project. For 189 of those accounts, they also had to agree to have the dispute settled before a private arbiter chosen by the bank.

In the wake of that imbalance of power, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau last month announced plans to study the use of arbitration clauses in financial contracts. The CFPB will analyze the kinds of claims that consumers bring in arbitration cases, the prevalence of arbitration clauses in agreements for consumer financial products, and what kind of an effect arbitration has on consumers and companies.

When it passed the Dodd-Frank bank reform bill, Congress gave the agency the power to create regulations that limit or end the practice.

The CFPB wants consumers to share their experiences and opinions about arbitration as part of its inquiry. Comments must be submitted by June 23, 2012. Information can be found here.

The US Supreme Court has sided with companies in favor of binding arbitration in two recent court cases.

White House denies arming Syrian rebels

President Barack Obama’s administration has repeatedly said over the past few months that it won’t ship arms to Syria’s outgunned opposition, warning that doing so will only escalate the bloody conflict there. But the Washington Post reported Wednesday that the U.S. has been helping to coordinate shipments of “more and better weapons” to the rebels, with Persian Gulf nations picking up the tab.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland denied that Washington was playing any role in arming the rebels.

“With regard to any assertions with regard to lethal (aid), we are not involved in that,” she said at her daily briefing.

“The United States has made a decision to provide nonlethal support to civilian members of the opposition.? This is things like medical equipment.? This is communications, things to help them, first of all, deal with the humanitarian aspects but also to help them to communicate better so that they can plan and be ready for the period of transition that we expect and want to see in Syria,” she said.

So is Washington helping to coordinate arms shipments?

“We are obviously consulting with various states about the decisions that we’ve made, that they’ve made,” Nuland said, declining repeated opportunities to explicitly criticize countries that have opted to help arm the opposition. “This is a loose coordination mechanism.”

The Washington Post said that Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other gulf states were providing “millions of dollars in funding each month” to arm the opposition.

At the White House, spokesman Jay Carney also seemed to tip-toe right up to the line of confirming that other countries are arming fighters opposed to President Bashar al-Assad.

“We continue to provide nonlethal support to the opposition.? And while I can only speak for the United States, we know that others are pursuing different types of support, and I’d refer you to them to characterize the nature of their actions,” he told reporters.

Carney reiterated Obama’s support for a ceasefire plan crafted by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan ? even while acknowledging that the Assad regime has essentially ignored it.

“We continue to be very concerned about the violence in Syria by the failure of the Assad regime to fulfill any of its obligations under the Kofi Annan plan,” the spokesman said.

“We’ve been extremely blunt about the fact that we remain very skeptical of Assad’s intentions,” Carney said. “We will, when appropriate and as necessary, discuss next steps.”

“But we are now supporting the Annan plan, supporting that mission because it has brought about some positive developments, at the very least, a reduction, not an elimination, of violence.? And … it embodies the best option here for the political transition that Syrians so desperately want,” Carney said.

Obama aides say that the deployment of U.N. observers on the ground has helped tamp down violence by Assad’s forces.

“If you look at the numbers of reported deaths day by day they are down since the monitors have started patrolling.? Also generally the overall level of violence is down country-wide,” an Obama aide told Yahoo News on condition of anonymity.

“Obviously, though, the regime still has a long way to go to be considered in compliance with the Annan plan’s six points,” the aide said.

Sen. John McCain, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, highlighted the Washington Post article on his Twitter feed, commenting: “As usual, this Administration leads from behind.”

McCain has repeatedly called for the administration to arm Syria’s rebels.

European Commission Joint Research Centre

A new report published today by the European Commission’s in-house science service, the Joint Research Centre (JRC), provides key information for policy makers and business managers on how to assess the environmental impacts of products and services. It helps to pave the way towards a resource-efficient Europe and aims to help design more sustainable products, which are indispensable in a world of 7 billion people and limited resources.

The increasing world population and the way in which we produce and consume goods are placing unprecedented pressures on our environment. We need to engage in more sustainable production and consumption patterns if we are to address the resulting challenges, in particular climate change and the depletion of natural resources.

Life Cycle Thinking is key to making substantial improvements in the environmental performance of goods and services. This concept looks at the environmental impact of production, distribution and consumption activities from cradle to grave, quantifying the environmental impact of products from the extraction of natural resources to product recycling or waste disposal.

The International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) was developed to provide guidance for greater consistency and quality assurance of Life Cycle Assessments. This new JRC report provides useful information that will help public administrations to use the ILCD as a technical reference for environment related policies, supporting them also for issuing tenders for service contracts. It supports business managers in developing greener, more efficient products and technologies by implementing Life Cycle Thinking in a structured and coherent manner. Finally, it helps policy makers and business actors to improve their environmental image and save money by implementing robust Life Cycle Assessments that will increase stakeholders’ confidence and resource efficiency, and promote more environmentally friendly supply chains.

Background

Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) helps to assess the sustainability of supply chains, use, and end-of-life management options for goods and services. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a structured scientific method, internationally standardised according to ISO 14040 and 14044 that facilitates the implementation of LCT.

This scientific method quantifies the resources consumed, emissions, and related environmental, health and resource depletion issues that are associated with any specific good or service. Some of the topics it addresses include climate change, summer smog, ecotoxicity, human cancer effects, material and energy resource depletion. It also quantifies functional performance in order to allow for direct comparisons with alternative options. Finally, it captures the full life cycle of the system, from the extraction of resources, through production, use, and recycling, up to the disposal of remaining waste.

Applications of LCA include ecolabelling, ecodesign, environmental and carbon footprinting, green procurement and waste management. It addresses strategic questions on the environmental impact of and potential improvements in the use of natural resources. It is used to steer the development of technology families (e.g. fuel cells) and to quantify the environmental performance of production sites and companies. Increasingly, this assessment is also employed to evaluate the environmental impact of policy options.

The 2011 Communication on a resource-efficient Europe, a flagship initiative under the Europe 2020 Strategy, takes these developments to the next stage, as it promotes taking a life-cycle approach to reducing the environmental impacts of resource use in the EU. This flagship initiative re-iterates the importance of using a consistent analytical approach.

Panasonic, Sony purportedly entering into OLED TV team-up, torrid love affair

Image

Sony might not have taken long to find a new date in the TV scene after breaking up with Samsung late last year: if you believe Nikkei, Panasonic is the belle of the ball. The two Japanese firms are reportedly hoping to speed up the development of cheap, mass-produced OLED TVs by sharing each other’s design techniques, including a Panasonic method for printing OLEDs on a scale that lets the company avoid $9,000 price tags. Neither Panasonic nor Sony has confirmed the talks, of course, and there’s no guarantee a partnership will emerge even if it truly gets hot and heavy. Still, if real, we’ll be on the lookout for a PanaSony OLED TV at CES in the future.
